The recital this year will take place on April 11 from 2-5p in Shopland Hall at the Scranton Cultural Center. "Dress" rehearsal will take place before the show and the cast party will follow immediately after the show. More information about the show will be available after the new year.

Show Costumes:

10am Class: Same as last year: Eggplant skirt, white shirt with embroidered Peter Pan collar and cape.

11am Class: TBA

Holiday Party December 13 from 2 - 5

ALL are welcome. Admission is free. There will be arts and crafts stations set up and a raffle. Please bring a dessert.

Due to the upcoming show, attendance at dance is very important. One exception is if your child is sick. If your child is sick, please keep them at home. Contact Maureen to let her know.

Dancers should be practicing their steps daily.

If you have outgrown ghillies that can be donated to the "ghillie box" please bring them to dance.

We will continue to have classes on 3 Saturdays of every month.

Tuition payments are due on the 1st class of each month. A $5/week late fee will be added to any payments received after the first class. Tuition is $35/month. All checks are made payable to Maureen King.

Please arrive on time for class. Late comers are a distraction for everyone.

We will have a parents meeting in October. The date will be announced soon.

If for any reason we cannot have 3 classes in a particular month, we will have 4 classes in another month to make up that class.

Parents - Please do not let you children run through the building. We have had a few accidents and a few 'close calls'. We do not want anyone getting hurt.

Please remember - no jeans, skirts or extra-long sweatpants.

The recital was a huge success. Maureen received so many positive comments and the children had a lot of fun. Many thanks to all who donated baskets, food, paper products, etc. Thank you to Jean Evans for all her hard work as chairman of the Basket Raffle. Thank you to Jack and Jeanne Murphy and Joan Steidle for working the door. Also thank you to Gretchen Welby and Mary Pat Burke for decorating Shopland Hall, and a special thank you to all the dancers for working so hard to make our recital so wonderful.

Summer Camp:

Camp begins this Monday (July 20) at 9:30. There are still some spots available. Camp will run July 20 - 23 from 9:30 - 11:30. Cost is $65/child.

Summer Dance

Hope you all enjoyed a little time off. We will be starting back on Tuesday June 2nd. As we all know, we have to dance a little in the summer to be ready to perform at all those church picnics that come around.

Here is a schedule for classes:

Advanced 7:15-8:15

Also, if your dancer has a friend or two that might want to try out Irish dance, they are more than welcome to sign up for the summer session. Just tell them to come to the June 2nd class.

Final Show Notes

All dancers will arrive promptly at 11:00 at Shopland Hall (4th floor) on Sunday.
Dancers should NOT be in costume.
We will have a complete run-through of the show at this time.
Parents are NOT permitted to stay.
A snack and drink will be provided for the dancers.
All parents are asked to come back to the theater by 1:00 to dress your child.
Dancers need to be dressed and back to the theater by 1:45.
Any parent that can donate paper plates, napkins and/or a dessert, please bring it with you to the theater.

Parents are permitted to take photographs and videos of the performance, but you must remain in your seat to do so.
The dancers will not be allowed to leave the theater between sets. Parents are encouraged to walk around the lobby and mingle between sets.
We have been granted access to the parking lots of the Scranton School District's Administration Building. Jim Joyce will be at the entrance to the parking lot to ensure that only our parents park there. Please tell him that "Ms. Maureen said we could park here."
Please remember that we are having a basket raffle and silent auction during the recital. Don't forget your donations!
Finally... your dancers have been working very hard for this show. Please encourage them to get plenty of rest and have a lot of fun!

Dance Portraits will be taken on the 26th during practice. Please bring your costume for the portraits and group picture.

For this practice I will need some parents to volunteer to stay and watch the 10:00 class when they are not dancing. Please see me.

Thursday April 30: All dancers report at 6:30-8:30. This is our final rehersal before the show.

Saturday May 1: No class for 10 or 11:00 classes. 12:00 please report at 11:00.

Recital Updates

Admissission to recital will be $5/person. Children under 5 are free.

Doors to Shopland Hall Lobby will open at 2:00PM. Doors to the Shopland Hall Theater will open at 2:45.

Children will be asked to arrive in hour intervals starting with the oldest dancers. That schedule will be handed out next week.

The cast party will immediately follow the recital from 6-8 PM in Shopland Hall. It is for dancers and their families. Because there is no admission fee it is not open to the public. Pizza and hoagies will be served. The concession bar will remain open and we will have a DJ.

Parents of the 12:00 Class have volunteered to donate cheese and cracker platters for the Recital. Please bring them with you that day.

Please see Jean Evans (10:00 class) for donations for our Basket Raffle. This Raffle is a very important part of the recital ans we need everyone's help to make it a success.

April Dance Dates:

4th, 11th, 18th and 25th

**There will be extra practices on weeknights and Sundays starting after Easter. A schedule will be sent home.**

It is very important that all dancers are at every practice now. We are getting close to the show and the children need to be a class to be sure they know the dances. If a dancer misses or has missed several classes he/she will be removed from the dance. I will not allow a child to perform a dance he/she is not competent in. Please do not expect to see your child in every dance if he/she has missed several classes.

It has come ti my attention that there is some confusion over tuition payments. Here is the policy:

All payments are due the first class of the month.
If your payment is not received on the first class, you will incur a weekly $5 late fee.
If your child is not at dance on the first class due to illness, etc., you may make your payment at the second class without penalty.
No matter how many classes your child attends during the month, the payment is still $35. There is no per-class payment. Please do not ask to do pay-as-you go as it is a bookkeeping nightmare. All checks must be made to Maureen King.

My "bookkeeper" has been very lenient in accepting late payments without charging late fees. That is going to stop. Due to my Mother's health problems lately, she will not be at every class - only the first of the month. Therefore, any payments made after that class will be made to me and charged the additional late fee. All accounts must be up to date for participation in the recital.

Finally, if anyone has financial difficulty and needs to discuss a different payment plan, please see me. We can always work something out. This information is kept confidential and may be adjusted as needed.

Dance Costumes:

If you have not sent your shirt to the embroiderer by now, you must do so immediately or you will not have a shirt. She is going to start a new order soon and will not be able to do any more shirts. It is $5/lapel {$10/shirt} and you must include a postage paid return envelope.

Class Attendance:

It is very important that your dancer attend all classes. We are preparing for our recital and there are a large number of dancers missing classes repeatedly. Dance Dates: There are no dance classes on January 31^st.

Costumes: On last week’s newsletter, the pattern information was omitted from some of the copies. This is the info for the 10:00 costumes: McCalls 4867 view D (no tabs)

All costumes must be ready by the end of February. We will be wearing our costumes for the parade.

Recital: We have finally secured a date and place for our recital! We have secured the Scranton Cultural Center’s Shopland Hall for Sunday May 3^rd.

I would like to thank Casey Welby for the great idea and Gretchen Welby for all of her help. I will have a very brief meeting on Saturday, January 24^th during each class to discuss the recital and the role each parent plays. Please make every effort to attend. I will need to know by the end of January if any child will NOT participate in the recital.

* It is very important that your child attend all classes. We will be working very hard to make this recital a wonderful experience for you and your child. Attendance at class is a vital part of this experience. I want the children to be confident in their dances and that means 100% participation.

PLEASE NOTE: for the 10:00 class , the capes will be available starting saturday the 24th from Lynn Mooney. The cost is $25 due at the time of pick-up. There will be a sign up sheet on the bar for anyone who will need a shirt made also.Cost unknown at this time.

January News

Recital:

Due to the recent deaths in my family which have forced me to miss class, I have postponed the recital. At this point, I am looking at the first 2 weeks in April for the recital. I will confirm the date as soon as I confirm the venue, which I hope will happen this week. All costumes must be finished by mid-February so we will be ready for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Please See below for details.

Costumes:

10:00 class - Capes are being made by Lynn Mooney. Please see her for payment. Skirts are to be made by the individual dancer. Material can be purchased at Sew Smart Fabrics on N. Washington Ave. The pattern is available at JoAnn Fabrics, or ask other parents. Any parent that has a skirt they no longer need may bring it to dance and donate it or sell it to a beginner dance parent. Please remember you need to purchase two short sleeve Peter Pan collar shirts and send them to the embroiderer:

All dancers need bubble socks and ghillies. {See Mrs. Murphy} All dancers also need black lollipop pants for under her costume.

Anyone wishing to order clothes, please print out an order form, circle your desired items and give it to Mrs. Murphy. No payment is necessary until we receive $150 of orders. We will then send them in with all payments.

Adult Ceili Classes Begin Thursday November 13!

Ceili is traditional Irish group dancing that began during the Cultural Revolution in Ireland. This form of dancing promotes socialization and Irish cultural preservation.

Parents Meeting:
On Saturday, October 25th, there will be a series of Parents meetings. I will meet with each of the classes during regular class times in the buffet room. I will be addressing costumes, recital and fundraisers. Please make every effort to attend.

Clothing Sale:
Our clothing sale has begun! I am very excited about this year's products. Not only is the design beautifully embroidered, but the items are reasonably priced. Please take an order form {or download it here} and look over the items. All orders are due back with payment by Nov. 1st to ensure Christmas delivery. If you would like a name embroidered on any item, please print the name on the bottom of the order form and add $5.00 to your total. Please specify where you would like the name placed. Please place your order form and payment in a sealed envelope and place it in the order box on the bar. We also have some samples to view and a sample sheet with all the items. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Adult Ceili Dance:
Caitlin C. and Kielan O'B. will be starting a Thursday night adult class very soon. More details will follow. They are looking for some participation from all the Moms and Dads. It is a great way to meet some other parents in the school and it's a great work-out!

The Blog:
Now that the colder weather is upon us, please remember to check the blog before leaving your house if the weather is not good. I will post weather related cancellations on the blog usually the night before dance, or first thing in the morning. If you cannot access the blog, please call the ICS in the morning. I am usually there by 9:15. The number is 347-3746.

Judy Schofield Tugend
I'm sure you have all seen the flyer on the bar regarding Judy Schofield Tugend. Judy, her twin sisters, my sister and I were some of the original O'Connor School Irish Stepdancers. Her parents, Ruth and the late Roy were founding members of the Irish Cultural Society, and avid supporters of the dancers. I have known this family for the better part of my life and have always known them to step up and help those in need.

I am asking the dancing families to help Judy and her family now. Judy is a wife and a mother and cannot work due to her condition. I am hoping that every family will donate something to help defray Judy's medical bills. Please place your donation in the envelope on the bar marked "Judy Tugend". I will collect donations this week and next week and then the dancers' fund will match those donations and give it to Judy's family.

Please be as generous as you can. Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.

Welcome Back!

This year I have reorganized all the classes. I will be doing some different excercises and drills with each class. Your dancer may complain about sore feet and legs, but it won't last long.

In addition to myself, Caitlin and Kielan will be teaching each class. Both Caitlin and Kielan are former ICS Stepdancers. I have also added 2 student assistants to help in each class. Elizabeth C., and Colleen C.

August Dates:
Camp this week is going very well, and I would like to try some of the new techniques we are using with the entire school. Therefore, instead of having regular classes on Tuesday, I am going to hold 2 workshops in August.

August 4 from 10:30 - 12:30 for any dancer in the 5:45 summer class.

August 5 from 10:30 - 12:30 for any dancer in the 6:45 summer class.

Pre-registration is required for these workshops.

Summer Camp
Beginner Camp: June 30 - July 3 from 9:30 - 11. Cost $70/person
Open to all new dancers and any dancer in the 9/9:30 classes. This year we will be doing something a little different at camp. Not only will we be doing 2-3's and 7's and basic steps, but we are going to do rhythmic training. This is a unique way to help the dancers keep time to various beats in music. Please inform Doodie if your child is planning to attend so I have enough student assistants available.

Ceili Camp: July 7 - 11th from 6:00 - 7:30pm. Cost $50/person
Open to anyone age 12 and up. Adults welcome! This camp is going to be a continuation of the winter Ceili classes. Please register for camp with Doodie, or by calling or emailing. Payment is not due until the first class.

April 27 Performance

On Sunday, April 27, we were asked to dance at the Mellow Theater at 2pm for the O'Flaherty Concert. The older girls will do the primary performance, but he would like to have the younger dancers on stage as well to participate in the program. The details are still a little sketchy, but please let me know at dance today if you are interested in participating.

Outgrown Ghillies and Hardshoes

Parade Info {Part 2}

If you are participating in the Mass, please meet in the basement of Cathedral rectory at 9:15. All others, please meet at the corner of Mulberry and Wyoming at 11:00 a.m., wearing tan pants, dress shoes, a white turtleneck and the cape. If it is cold, you may wear a coat under the cape. White hat and gloves if necessary. We are in the first division this year, so please be prompt.

Parents: Please pick up your child at the end of the parade route at The Scranton Club. You must see someone before you can take your child for security reasons. If someone else is picking up your child, please make sure Maureen knows about it before the parade begins.

In case of bad weather:
Use your own judgement..if you have a clear rain ponch you may wear it. Purple Velvet dresses will be worn for mass no matter what the weather. Bring your capes and tan pants in case it rains for the parade. O'Malley Harris building will be open for bathroom use. Don't forget the post parade party at the ICS immediately following our portion of the parade. FOOD, DRINKS AND A DJ.. All are invited...$10 per family please bring a dessert. Thanks

Anyone participating in the Mass must be in the basement of the cathedral no later than 9:15 on Saturday. This is a change!

March is a crazy month for dance. Please take note of the class schedule and always check the blog for updated information.

March 1: Regular classes.
March 8: Cape pick-up Please pick up your capes between 11:00 and 1:00. There will be no classes due to the St Pat’s dinner dance. All dues must be paid in full in order to receive a cape.
March 15: St. Patrick's Day Parade. More info will be distributed as soon as I get it from the parade committee. Be sure you have tan pants and white turtleneck.
March 29: Regular classes.

Performance Dates:
We have been asked to dance at several events in March. Anyone that has a purple dress or purple skirt and cape may sign up to dance. If at all possible, please commit to all performances. It makes it easier on the children.

Adult Dance Classes
I will be holding adult classes every Friday night from 7-8pm. The classes are $5/person and will start on February 15. Bring a friend or two and learn some dances in time for St. Patrick's Day. Wear comfy clothes and shoes and in no time you'll be dancing as well as Beth Hopkins!

Parade Info
All dancers need tan pants, white turtle neck and dress shoes. Each dancer will be given a cape. We will have Irish knit hats and gloves on sale for anyone interested. More info to follow as it's received.

The dress rehearsal scheduled for tonight at Scranton HS at 5:30pm is STILL ON!
The temperature will begin to rise around noon, changing the precipitation to all rain. They are still expecting us at the school. If anything changes, it will be posted here.

DVD order envelopes are available now. They are to be turned in on Saturday. Cost is $30 for one, $55 for two.

Wednesday
At the ICS building. 6pm. ALL DANCERS. Practice should be over at 7:15.

Thursday
At Scranton High. ALL DANCERS please report at 5:30. The 9 and 9:30 classes will be dismissed at approx. 6:45. All other dancers at approx. 8pm. This is NOT a dress rehersal.

Friday
At Scranton High. DRESS REHEARSAL. All dancers come in costume at 5:30. We will follow Thursday's schedule, but may be delayed a bit. Please be patient. The dancers need to be confident and relaxed. Saturday

1:00 class: Please arrive no later than 11:00

10:30 class: Please arrive no later than 12:00

9 and 9:30 classes: Please arrive no later than 12:30

All dancers please come in costume and make-up.

Make-up
All dancers are asked to wear a dark eyeliner, blush, a light colored eye shadow, mascara and lipstick. We will add the stage make-up. Please be subtle when choosing lipstick and eye shadow colors.

Hair
All dancers should arrive with clean and dry hair with nothing in it. {bring a comb or brush} Hair will be fixed for you.

Seating Doors open at 1:30, but do not rush to get a 'good seat'. All the seats are very good. If you sit too close to the stage, you will not see the dancers' feet!

All the dancers need to have a black skirt and long sleeve, turtleneck leotard for the recital. A sample has been ordered. A child's medium fits Maeve K. EDIT: Dancewear solutions is currently out of stock for Child's Large Leotards. The others all appear to be in stock. If you need a Child's Large Leotard, go HERE to Discount Dance Supply 1-800-328-7107. As of 2:30pm on Tuesday, they have them (just ordered one). Sadly, they do not carry the skirt.

Recital News

The recital is fast approaching. We will be starting extra practices next week. Please see the schedule at the bottom of the page. It is important that all dancers attend all practices. If a dancer misses two or more practices he/she will be removed from that dance.

Payments are now due for the recital. All payments are due by February 1^st. Payments are as follows:

1 dancer: $100

2 dancers: $125

3 or more dancers: $10 each

All Dance tuition must be up to date for a dancer to participate in the recital. Late fees will be applied to payments that are made after the 1of the month.

The recital is just around the corner. Please make every effort to attend all dance classes. Starting in January, you can make your recital payment(s). Costs are $100 for the first dancer, $25 for the second and $10 for each additional dancer. Those payments will be collected by a parent in each class. Please see Mary Pat Burke (9:30 class) for details. You may pay all at once or make payments. The total fee must be paid by January 19.

Children's Christmas Brunch with Santa

There were several issues discussed at today's parents meeting.

The recital is scheduled for February 3, 2008 at 3pm, with the cast party to follow. Suggestions for cast party location/food options are welcome.

A Jewelry Party fund-raiser to benefit the ICS Stepdancers will be held at the ICS building on Sat., November 10 during dance class hours. Orders will be in in time for the holidays. Feel free to bring a friend to check out the jewelry!

Several fund raising ideas to benefit the Irish Cultural Society were proposed.

We will start back on Saturdays on September 8^th. New students are welcome to join. There is a $25 registration fee for new dancers and monthly classes are $32.00. Hardshoe class is an additional $20 per month. We will keep the same time schedule as last year. Classes will also be held on the 15^th and 22^nd.

Recital:

The recital was scheduled for October 7^th. However, due to a large number of dancers taking the summer off, I have postponed it. As in the past, we were going to apply a $100 participation fee to each dancer (with reductions for families). Having the recital in October would not give families enough time for the 3 month payment plan we implemented for other recitals.

We will be having a Parents Meeting in early September to discuss this and other fund raising activities.

Camp Dost

On Tuesday, July 10th...Some of our dancers and I traveled to Millville, Pa to Camp Victory. We were asked to perform for Children with cancer through a program called Camp Dost. There were approx 65 campers there. We danced a few numbers and then taught the campers the Haymakers Jig. Almost30 campers were able to get up and dance with us.

It was a night we will never forget. I have never been so proud of our dancers. They were outgoing and helpful and understanding. The parents of the dancers were also moved by this experience. We should all be very proud of these young dancers.

We were asked to come back again next year; but before I could answer, the dancers all said YES! We took some great photos and I hope to have them up on the blog soon!!

A special thanks to all the parents that took time out of their busy schedules to drive to Millville.

We are dancing at Christ the King picnic in Dunmore on Saturday July 7th at 7:00. All dancers that attended Jack Frost may dance. Please let me know if you can attend. We will practice on Tuesday July 3rd during class time.

The older dancers (1:30 class) will perform at the Scranton/WB Yankees game on Friday, July 27th. As of now, we will only be dancing 2 dances prior to the game. There will be an extra practice for the 9:30 and 10:30 classes on Wednesday, May 23 from 6:15 to 7:30. The dancers from the 1:00 class will have their extra practice Thursday, May 24 from 6:15 to 7:45.

Summer Camp for Beginners
Summer camp will be held on June 18 - 21. It will be at the ICS from 9:30 to 11:00 and is open to all beginner dancers. This includes all the 9:00 class children as well as any new student that would like to try Irish Step. The cost is $65/student and can be paid on the first day of camp. Jack Frost Information

The Jack Frost Celtic Festival is almost here! Following are the highlights from Saturday's meeting:

Dancers will take the stage promptly at 1:15 both days*. Dancers must arrive by noon.
Dancers meet in the ski rental/kiddie area toward the back of the main building.
Once a dancer is in the room, they may not leave.
Parents - drop your child off then wait in the hall if you need to help your child change. Dancers will be going over their dances before changing. You will be called when it's time to dress. Once your child is dressed, go find a seat so you can enjoy the show!
Do NOT come in costume! Part of the drama of the performance is entering in costume.
Bring costumes in a labeled bag.
NO FOOD in the back room!
NO eating in costume!
Girls' hair - pull back top and sides only. Wear the purple ribbon.
Ghillies, bubble socks, hard shoes. No tights.
Costume for girls: Purple dress if you have it. Otherwise, "ballet pink" leotard, purple skirt, purple cape.
* Sunday Mass. If your child is going to participate in the 11 o'clock Mass, see Maureen.
Advance tickets are available at the ICS during dance practice this weekend. $14 advance, $17 at the door. Dancers do NOT need a ticket.
For security reasons, once children are in the back room, they stay with the dance group until they have danced and returned to the back room. DO NOT take your child from the dance floor.
If someone other than the "regular" dance parent is going to be picking a child up, make sure that person is introduced to Maureen or Erin Joyce. Your child will not be released to someone who is a stranger to Maureen.
If your child has a purple dance shirt, have them wear it after the show. Everyone will be dressed in green - the purple will make them easier to identify.
Note - the Ski Lift ride takes an hour. No dancer is to ride the ski lift before the performance.

Baskets Needed for Jack Frost

NOTE FROM PATTY CARR:
The Irish Cultural Society will once again move to Jack Frost Mountain for the Celtic Festival which will be held Memorial Day Weekend (May 26 & 27.) While we are at Jack Frost, we will be concentrating on fund raising for the society. This is truely our time to raise the money we need to pay the utility bills that allow our society to have a building. Without the ICS building, our dancers would not have a home. As a dancing parent and treasurer of the ICS, I am thankful to the society and Maureen for allowing the dancers to fill the building each weekend.

Currently, I am asking for basket donations from everyone so we may fill our stand at Jack Frost. Some people have told me that they already have their baskets. Thank you so much. Other parents have asked if they can just make a cash donation. That is fine. I don't mind shopping to fill baskets. In years past, some people have asked me to decorate their basket. Not a problem. Lately, people have asked me specifically what kind of baskets we want. We usually have a large variety of baskets, some for children, adults, food themes, game themes, water themes, picnic themes, sports themes, summer holiday themes, Christmas themes, and more. Cape Reminder
All capes must be returned next week. Please be sure to have your dancer's name on the cape so we can check your name off the list.

Jack Frost
This year I will only be taking about 50 dancers to Jack Frost. In years past we had an hour to preform. This year we have only 45 minutes. Next week I will post a list of dancers. If you know you are unable to attend this performance, please let me know this week. Those dancers going to Jack Frost must commit to attend ALL practices. Any dancer missing 2 practices will be replaced. We will be having additional practices on Sundays as well as during the week. Also, any dancer that has not mastered his/her steps as of this week will not be considered for Jack Frost. We are starting the choreographing stage of the dances and do not have time to re-teach steps. An informational meeting will be held in early May to explain arrival times, costumes, etc.

Sean May has asked me to announce that the ICS building may be rented for Communions, birthdays or any special occasions. Please call Sean at 586-3315 for more information.

We won the Irish Dancing Award in this year's parade!! Congratulations!

Capes:

All capes will be returned April 21. Please pin your child's name on the cape and hand it to one of our volunteers. Do NOT just place it in a box. We have to check each name. Anyone that does not return their cape will be charged a $25 fee. All capes must be returned no later than April 28.
